    Information & Communication Technology

    Picture
In the past decade the Maltese Government has extensively invested in its telecommunications infrastructure making it one of the best in Europe. Huge investments were carried out at all levels in ICT. Today Malta boasts a truly magnificent infrastructure with one of the highest broadband access levels in the EU. Malta ranked first in the eEurope+ Benchmarking Study, carried out by the EU on the 10 new EU member states, with a 98% penetration rate of fixed line telephony, over an 85% rate of mobile phone penetration, the cheapest internet access, the highest proportion of public internet access points and the highest investment in computers and internet access in primary and secondary schools.  Broadband is available in 95% of the national territory. Malta is placed amongst the highest of the new EU member states when it comes to technology and in the upper end of the scale of the EU 25 member states.   Malta’s strong suits in telecommunications lie in the population’s fluency in international languages; its CET time zone makes it ideal for business communication throughout Europe and Malta also holds similar business, accounting and legal frameworks to the UK.

The SmartCity project, approved by Malta’s government in February 2007, involving an investment of some US$300 million by Dubai Internet City’s Tecom, is one of the biggest projects to be taken on by the country to date: a state-of-the-art high tech business park that will include residential areas, hotels, restaurants, a marina and shops, it is set to become a key attraction for international ICT investors.

Maltese ICT companies are experienced in developing and testing new products and services on the diverse and contained local market before successfully exporting their services and solutions to the UK, Germany, Netherlands and North Africa.

Industry giants such as Oracle, Microsoft, HP and SAP have all established operations on the island in the last few years, while more specialised software developers such as Crimsonwing, Uniblue, GFI, Anvil, 6pm and Shireburn have equally found the island to be a profitable and productive location.

Apart from multiple freelancers malta is also rich in  smaller also reliable  software development companies.
